What Will Infinito & Dinastía’s Foal Look Like?
At Smooth Moves Ranch, we believe every foal is a miracle, and a little bit of science, too. As foaling season approaches, we’re getting excited (and curious!) about what colors we might see this year, especially from one of our most anticipated pairs: Infinito de Doña Lola and Dinastía IA. Let’s take a peek into the fascinating world of coat color genetics and explore what colors their future foal might inherit.
🐴 Meet the Parents
🌟 Sire: Infinito de Doña Lola
Color: Bay
Markings: A distinct star on his forehead, and white socks on his right front and right hind legs
Temperament: Steady, confident, and kind, a true Paso Fino gentleman
🌑 Dam: Dinastía IA
Color: Dark Bay (no markings)
Temperament: Elegant, wise, and nurturing, an excellent mother
Together, this pair brings not only exceptional bloodlines and temperament, but also a beautiful palette of genetic possibilities.
🧬 A Quick Lesson in Horse Color Genetics
All horse coat colors begin with two basic pigments:
Black (controlled by the Extension gene, or E)
Red (when the horse carries two recessive e genes, resulting in chestnut)
The Agouti gene (A) determines where black pigment is expressed:
A/: Restricts black to the “points” (mane, tail, legs), creating a bay
a/a: No restriction—results in a black coat
So for a horse to be bay, they must carry:
At least one E (black pigment)
At least one A (to restrict that pigment to the points)
🔍 What We Can Guess About Infinito and Dinastía
Both Infinito and Dinastía are bay-based, which means:
Each carries E/_ and A/_
They could be homozygous (E/E or A/A) or heterozygous (E/e or A/a)
If both carry a hidden e or a, some interesting surprises are possible!
🎨 Possible Foal Colors
Let’s look at the most likely outcomes based on their genetics:
✅ Most Likely:
Bay (like Infinito)
Dark Bay (like Dinastía)
⚠️ Less Likely, but Possible:
Black (if both carry the recessive a and pass it on)
Chestnut (if both carry one copy of e and pass it on)
Here’s an estimated probability chart (assuming one copy of each recessive gene is present in both parents):
Foal Color | Estimated Chance |
Bay/Dark Bay | ~60–75% |
Black | ~12.5–25% |
Chestnut | ~12.5% |
🧪 Want to be 100% sure? DNA testing can confirm whether either horse carries hidden red (e) or black (a) genes. Little hint? Infinito and Dinastia have had two foals, one dark bay colt and on chestnut filly. One born a week late and the other born a week early.
✨ What About Markings?
Markings like stars, socks, and blazes are not as predictable—they’re influenced by multiple genes and modifiers. However, since Infinito has a visible star and white socks, there’s a good chance some markings may appear in the foal, even if subtle. Dinastía's solid coat could reduce the likelihood, but you never know—foals love to surprise us!
